Stairwell Identification Signs

Most building and fire codes require signs inside stairwells to advise building occupants and fire/rescue personnel about vital egress information. The sign states the current floor level, stairwell identification and the direction to and the location of, the egress floor level.

Section 5-2.2.6.6 of the 1994 Life Safety Code Handbook, Sixth Edition which is published by National Fire Protection Association, Inc. states:


Stairs serving four or more stories shall be provided with signage within the enclosure at each floor landing. The signage shall indicate the floor level, the terminus of the top and bottom of the stair enclosure, and the identification of the stair. The signage shall also state the floor level of, and the direction to, exit discharge. The signage shall be inside the enclosure located approximately 5ft. above the floor landing in a position that is readily visible when the door is in the open or closed position.

The above section is a guideline that most municipalities use for their building and fire codes. Some details may vary, so it is advisable to contact your local building inspector for the exact requirements.

Our standard size sign is 5 ½" x 6" and is made of anodized aluminum. The lettering is made by a unique process that makes the lettering actually part of the aluminum. The lettering is not printed or painted on the sign so it can not wear off. The sign is clear anodized, making it long lasting and virtually maintenance free. These signs can be mounted by either adhesive backing or screws. For areas where vandalism or theft is a concern, we offer vandal resistant screws for mounting.

The price of each 5½" x 6" sign is $19.50 (black background with natural aluminum letters) or $27.50 (natural aluminum background with black letters) and includes your choice of adhesive backing or four drilled mounting holes. Add $2.50 per sign for vandal resistant screws and plastic anchors.

Grade 2 braille translations can be added to these signs for an additional cost of $3.00 per sign.

Custom sizes and design layouts, such as the inclusion of maps, can be made up to 11" x 17". A special quote is required for these signs.
